Clicker, Crest, and Crown: A Brief History of the Central Archers

Click and Release

In competitive archery, where recurve bows are used, a clicker is an aluminium or carbon device attached where the arrows rest when archers draw their bows. Although, it is primarily used for maintaining consistency, it also somehow signals the release of the arrow when you hear it click.

The 1990's was a memorable time in the history of Calauag Central College when it was known to be a powerhouse of competitive ping-pong players, winning medals left and right. But in the early 2000’s, with Mr. Gelo Aspiras' introduction of the sport and early training of pioneering archers from CCC like Justin Aguilar, Darenn Salvatus, and Dave Buenaobra, Centralians heard the click and fell in love with a new sport—Archery.

Cresting the Crown

Crest and crown are terms exclusively used in traditional archery, where arrows are usually made of wood. Wooden arrows have a specific area at the end near where the nock is placed which is called the crown. This is also the area where crests, colored markings mainly used for arrow identification, are placed.

The first Centralian archer to have reached the Southern Tagalog CALABARZON Athletic Association (STCAA) meet was Dave Buenaobra. From then on, Calauag Central College emerged to become a haven of competitive archers eventually reaching the Palarong Pambansa and winning medal after medal.

The Central Archers has had numerous milestones but it is hoped that in time, we could come up with a comprehensive list of accomplishments so far, which are just too numerous for this brief article.

And as such, this article does not, in any way, claim to be a comprehensive report of the history of the Central Archers. But this is a way to start recognizing the student athletes who have given prestige to the institution. A real work in progress. And perhaps, this is the author's way of releasing the arrow which would ultimately reach the bull's eye.

About the author Chipee Barros is a Sagittarian. That's it. That's the tweet. Sincerest gratitude to Mr. Jose F. Aguilar III, Mr. Edgar G. Rapanan, Mrs. Donna A. Tiama, Mr. Darenn Salvatus and Ms. Charlene Suayan for most of the information used in the writing of this article.
